With the E*Trade Plan you can fund the ROTH IRA by the tax deadline of the subsequent year and there are no minimum balance requirements or annual maintenance fees.
Therefore, if your child has earned income and you are in financial position to do so—an annual contribution to a ROTH IRA for your child should be a top priority.
Also, keep in mind that there are other college savings plans such as state sponsored 529 plans, state pre-paid tuition plans and Coverdell accounts that may be of great benefit to your family. The Nebraska 529 Plan has a wide selection of funds, the Utal 529 Plan utilizes the Vanguard Index Fund and has some of the lowest fees.
You can get a tax break in many states. The amount will depend on your tax bracket and the amount of yor contributions. If you were a resident of States such as Arizona, Kansas, Maine, Missouri & Pennsyvania you could get a tax break if you were to contribute to "any" State Plan.
The Coverdell Account allows you to use the fund for primary, secondary and college expenses and gives you much more control over your investment choices. The disadvantage is that the contribution limit is lower and their are income caps.
